Guides

For listeners

You do not need an account. Everything is on the venue's board. Touch it to open the menu.

The board
Shows who is on air, what is playing and the next set. If your viewer has media turned off, the board shows the same information as floating text.
Lineup
Lists the sets in the next 7 days, in SLT.
Request
Sends a track request to the DJ who is live. It only works while a DJ is on deck, and you can send one request a minute.
Alerts on and Alerts off
Alerts on gets you an IM when a DJ goes live at that venue. Alerts off stops them. The IMs come from the board object. See How do I turn go-live alerts on or off?
Get CueSwitch
For guests who want a system like this for their own club. It opens the CueSwitch website and sends you one IM with the way to CueSwitch HQ. Nothing goes to local chat. See What is the Get CueSwitch button?
The tip jar
Click the jar and choose an amount. The venue decides who gets it: the DJ on deck, the venue, or a split. When the venue lets you choose, the jar offers the choice. With no DJ on deck the venue keeps the tip.
The schedule board
A second screen, if the venue has one. It shows this week's lineup in SLT and marks who is on now. It has no menu.
The greeter
If the venue has one, it says a welcome line to you in local chat, once a day. Only you see it. It may hand you a landmark and a link to the venue's group. It never sends an IM, and the venue counts visitors without keeping names or avatar keys. See Visitor counts.
No sound?
Make sure music is on in your viewer preferences and that you are standing on the venue's parcel. See The stream does not play.

DJ login and I'm on on the menu are for DJs only.

Questions and answers

Pick a question, or scroll. Each question has its own link you can share.

Paying and renewing

How do I pay or renew?

Pay any CueSwitch Terminal in-world to start or renew a venue. It accepts three amounts: L$400 for 1 week, L$1,600 for 4 weeks and L$4,800 for 12 weeks.

Your first payment starts your venue. Every later payment adds time to what you have left. The date is under Paid until on the Overview tab of your dashboard.

A club's managers can renew it too: see Can other avatars help run my club?

Autopay is off unless you switch it on. On your Home Terminal, Options > AutoPay pays L$400 a week for the 1 to 8 weeks you set, sends an IM receipt each time, then stops. Turn it off there or on your dashboard.

Find a terminal. See pricing.

Can I get a stream of my own as a DJ or singer?

Yes. DJ Live and DJ Radio are personal streams for one DJ or singer, bought at the Performer Terminal in the CueSwitch store. See DJ streams for prices and how to buy, and the DJ guide for how to use it.

The DJ Tip Jar is no longer included. Your plan is your stream and your web account. To give a club your stream, copy the address from your web account: a club manager pastes it into About Land > Sound > Music URL. If you already have a DJ Tip Jar, you keep it: touch it and choose Stream URL and the address comes by IM.

What happens if I miss a payment?

  1. 3 days and 1 day before your time runs out, you get a reminder. Your board sends it to you by IM and shows the days left in its hover text.
  2. When time runs out, a 3-day grace period starts. The stream stays on. The dashboard shows Overdue (grace period).
  3. After the grace period, the venue is suspended. The stream is switched off and DJs cannot connect. Your DJs, schedule and music are kept for 30 days.
  4. After those 30 days, the venue and its data are removed. You would need to pay for a new venue and set it up again.

Pay at a terminal at any point before removal and the stream comes back. Paying during the grace period adds time from the date it ran out. Paying while suspended counts from the moment you pay.

A DJ Live or DJ Radio stream follows the same steps, but its data is kept for 7 days after the pause, not 30. See DJ streams.

Signing in and setup

How do I sign in? Is there a password?

There are no passwords. You sign in with a one-time link from in-world.

  1. Owners: touch your CueSwitch board and choose Owner login, or touch a CueSwitch Terminal and choose Owner login. DJs: touch the board and choose DJ login.
  2. Open the link you are given. It works once and expires after 15 minutes. Open it in the browser you want to stay signed in with.
  3. Press Continue to your CueSwitch dashboard.

The link in your purchase IM is good for 24 hours. Owner login works for the venue owner and for the club's managers. The board shows the Owner login button only to its owner, so managers use a CueSwitch Terminal.

A DJ Live or DJ Radio stream has no board. Touch a CueSwitch Terminal in the CueSwitch store and choose Owner login, or IM Cara Rewell for a link.

How do I get my kit again?

A new club does not get a free venue kit. CueSwitch devices are sold separately at the CueSwitch shop. If you already have a venue kit, you keep it, with Resend kit and updates. A club that paid the earlier L$50 first week still gets the kit with its first full week (L$400 or more). The DJ Tip Jar is no longer included with DJ Live or DJ Radio, so a new DJ stream has no kit either. A DJ who already got the performer kit keeps it, with Resend kit and updates.

The CueSwitch Courier delivers your kit to your inventory, in a folder called CueSwitch Venue Kit, followed by the version number: the board, the tip jar, the Stream Setter, the Schedule Board, the Greeter, the No-Click board and schedule, the Top Tippers board, the Home Terminal and three notecards. To get it again, use either of these:

  • On your dashboard, press Resend kit. It normally arrives within a couple of minutes.
  • Touch the CueSwitch Courier at CueSwitch HQ. If you touch it twice within a minute, it asks you to wait.

WhereSetup tabGet your kitResend kit

The kit is only for venue owners who have one.

How do I update my devices?

The Your board and tip jar table on the Setup tab shows each device's version. A device that is behind shows Update available. The Greeter panel on the same tab says so for the Greeter. The Stream Setter and the Schedule Board are not listed: replace them from the new folder too.

  1. Press Send update. The CueSwitch Courier sends the new version to your inventory.
  2. Rez the new copy where the old one stood, and remove the old one.
  3. If you replaced the tip jar, grant the debit permission again on the new one.
  4. If you replaced the Greeter, drag your landmark into the new one.

WhereSetup tabYour board and tip jarSend update

How do I set the parcel music URL?

  1. On your dashboard, copy the Stream URL. It is on the Overview tab under Your stream, and on the Setup tab.
  2. In Second Life, open About Land on your parcel and go to the Sound tab.
  3. Paste the URL into Music URL and save.

Shortcut: when your board first connects, it asks you in a pop-up whether to set this parcel's music to your CueSwitch stream. Say yes. (This works when you own the land; on group land set it by hand.)

If the Sound tab is greyed out, your avatar does not have rights to edit that parcel.

Or let the Stream Setter do it. It is a small CueSwitch device, sold separately. Put it on your parcel and it keeps the Music URL on your stream, every minute. See the owner guide.

Can I change the stream quality?

Yes. Your stream is 320 kbps MP3 by default, which is the best quality. On the Setup tab, under Stream quality, you can pick 192 or 128 kbps instead, for example if your listeners have slow connections.

Changing it restarts your stream. Listeners drop, and in Firestorm they have to turn their parcel music off and on again: the viewer does not reconnect by itself. Do it when the club is quiet. DJs can keep sending 128 to 320 kbps; the station converts it to your setting.

WhereSetup tabStream qualitySave stream quality

The stream does not play in Second Life.

Check these in order.

  1. Music is on in your viewer. Open Preferences, then Sound & Media (the name varies a little between viewers). Make sure music is enabled and not muted.
  2. Firestorm allowed the stream. Firestorm's media filter asks before it plays a new stream address, then asks whether to remember the choice. Choose Allow, then Always. If you chose Deny earlier, remove the address from Firestorm's media filter list (Preferences, Sound & Media) and try again.
  3. The parcel music URL is set. It must match the Stream URL on your dashboard exactly: it starts with http://, not https://. See How do I set the parcel music URL?
  4. The stream URL exists. A new venue takes about a minute to set up. Reload the Overview tab until the Stream URL appears.
  5. The venue is paid. If the grace period has ended, the stream is switched off. See What happens if I miss a payment?
  6. There is something to play. With no DJ live, AutoDJ plays your uploaded tracks. Upload some on the AutoDJ music tab.

Still silent? Contact support with your venue name and region.

The tip jar needs the debit permission. What is that?

Second Life asks if the jar may take L$ from you. This is the debit permission. It lets the jar pay each DJ their share of a tip. Click Grant.

If you missed the request, touch the jar to be asked again. Without the permission the jar still takes tips, but DJs are not paid and the venue keeps everything. The jar's hover text says when the permission is missing.

What does the Visitors page show, and what does CueSwitch keep?

The Visitors tab shows who is on your parcel now, unique visitors today, a daily average, your busiest day, unique visitors per day for the last 30 days and the number of visitors during each DJ set. A set's number appears a few minutes after it ends.

The numbers come from your Greeter. They cover the parcel it stands on, and only while it is rezzed. No Greeter, no numbers: see the owner guide.

CueSwitch keeps no names and no avatar keys. Each visitor becomes a one-way code that is different at every venue. Visit times are kept for 30 days. After that only the daily totals remain. The details are in the privacy policy.

WhereVisitors tab

What is the Get CueSwitch button?

It is a button on the board's menu and the tip jar's menu for guests who want a system like yours. It opens the CueSwitch website and sends the guest one private IM with the way to CueSwitch HQ. Nothing goes to local chat, and each guest gets it once every 10 minutes.

It is on by default. To switch it off, touch the board's MENU as the owner and choose Hide promo. Show promo brings it back. Each object has its own switch, so do the same on the tip jar.

DJs and music

How do DJs log in?

  1. The owner adds the DJ on the DJs tab, using the DJ's Second Life name and an on-air name.
  2. The DJ touches the venue's board in-world and chooses DJ login. The board gives a one-time link that works for 15 minutes.
  3. The link opens the DJ login page. It shows the server, port, mount, username and password to type into DJ software.

Full steps and the settings for BUTT, Mixxx, Traktor and VirtualDJ are in the DJ guide.

What does “I’m on” do?

It is a button on the board menu for DJs who are not streaming through CueSwitch. It tells the venue you are the DJ on deck. The board and the tip jar show you, the jar pays you as the DJ on deck and track requests reach you as IMs. It does not start the stream or change the music.

You must be on the venue's DJ list, and you must have used DJ login on the board once. It ends when your set ends, or after 3 hours if you have no set. The owner can end it by disabling the DJ. The steps are in the DJ guide.

Why can’t my DJ connect?

Check these in order.

  1. Wrong login details. Copy the server, port, mount, username and password from the DJ login page instead of typing them. If the password is lost, press Regenerate password. The old one stops working right away. If the software has no username field, type username:password into its password field. Check the format too: Icecast 2, MP3, 128 to 320 kbps. The DJ guide has the settings for each program.
  2. Outside their set. If Only let DJs connect during their slots is on, a DJ can only connect from 10 minutes before a set assigned to them. See What does “only during slots” do?
  3. The DJ is disabled. On the DJs tab the status reads Disabled. The owner presses Enable.
  4. No login yet. If the DJ touched the board and was told they are not on the roster, the owner has to add them on the DJs tab. If their status reads Waiting for station, the owner presses Create missing stream logins.
  5. The stream is off. A venue that is more than 3 days overdue is suspended, and nobody can connect. The DJ login page says so. See What happens if I miss a payment?

What does “only during slots” do?

It is a switch on the Schedule tab called Only let DJs connect during their slots. When it is on, a DJ's login only works during sets assigned to that DJ, from 10 minutes before the start. A DJ still on air when their set ends is disconnected within a minute.

When it is off, any DJ on your list can connect at any time. A DJ you have disabled cannot connect either way.

WhereSchedule tabWho may connectOnly let DJs connect during their slotsSave

All set times are in Second Life Time (SLT, US Pacific).

How does AutoDJ music work?

AutoDJ plays your uploaded tracks, shuffled, whenever no DJ is live. When a DJ connects it steps aside. When the DJ disconnects it comes back.

  1. Open the AutoDJ music tab.
  2. Under Upload music, choose one or more MP3 files. Each can be up to 50 MB.
  3. Press Upload to AutoDJ. New tracks start playing within a minute or two.

To remove a track, press Delete next to it in the Tracks list. Uploads open as soon as your stream URL appears on the Overview tab.

Music licensing is the venue's responsibility. Only upload music you own or have the rights to. See the terms.

Tips and alerts

How do tips work? Who gets them?

People pay your tip jar in L$. DJ keeps every tip, the club keeps every tip, or a split: your choice. On the Tips & Discord tab, tick what tippers may choose:

  • Tip the DJ: the DJ on deck keeps the whole tip.
  • Tip the club: the venue keeps the whole tip.
  • Split: the DJ gets your percentage, the venue keeps the rest.

Then pick the default. Someone who just pays the jar gets the default, so tipping stays one click. When you tick more than one, tippers can pick at the jar.

In a split, the DJ's share is the tip times the percentage, rounded down to a whole L$. The venue keeps the remainder. Example: a L$100 tip at 50% sends L$50 to the DJ and keeps L$50 for the venue. A L$15 tip at 50% sends L$7 to the DJ and keeps L$8.

The venue keeps the whole tip when no DJ is on deck, or when the owner is the one on deck, whatever was chosen. A DJ is on deck when they are live on the stream, or after they touch I'm on at the board.

The jar pays the DJ itself, so it needs the debit permission. The History tab shows what each tipper chose.

WhereTips & Discord tabTipsTippers can chooseSave tip settings

A DJ did not get their share of a tip.

The usual reasons:

  • The tip jar has no debit permission. Touch it to be asked again.
  • The tip went to the venue by choice: your default is Tip the club, the tipper picked Tip the club, or the split gives DJs 0%.
  • No DJ was on deck (nobody live on the stream and nobody had touched I'm on), or the owner was on deck. The venue keeps the whole tip.
  • The DJ's avatar is not linked yet. A DJ is linked the first time they touch the board and choose DJ login. The DJs tab shows Linked or Not yet in the Avatar column.
  • CueSwitch could not be reached when the tip came in. The jar then leaves the L$ with the venue.

The History tab lists every tip with what the tipper chose and a status: Paid, Pending, Venue only or Failed. Failed means the DJ share could not be sent, so the venue kept the full tip.

How do I turn go-live alerts on or off?

Alerts are opt-in. In-world, touch the board and choose Alerts on. When a DJ goes live at that venue, you get an IM. To stop, touch the board and choose Alerts off.

The IMs come from the board object. Alerts are never sent by bots, and CueSwitch sends no group notices.

How do I get alerts in Discord?

Owners can have CueSwitch post in a Discord channel by itself: when a DJ goes live, about 15 minutes before each scheduled set and halfway through it while someone is on air. The posts are labeled automated and never ping anyone.

  1. In Discord, open the channel settings. Go to Integrations, then Webhooks, then New Webhook, then Copy Webhook URL.
  2. On your dashboard, paste the URL into Webhook URL and press Save webhook.

WhereTips & Discord tabDiscord alertsWebhook URLSave webhook

Under Which posts you can switch each kind off, and Send a test post posts one message right away.

Only https://discord.com/api/webhooks/… and https://discordapp.com/api/webhooks/… addresses are accepted. The URL is stored encrypted and never shown again. To remove it, save with the field empty.

Account

Can other avatars help run my club?

Yes. A club can have up to 10 managers. Add them on the Setup tab under Managers with their avatar UUID (the key on their profile) and, if you like, a name. That invites them. The person accepts the invitation on their CueSwitch dashboard: they sign in with Owner login on a CueSwitch Terminal, or a link from Cara Rewell, and press Accept. An invitation expires after 14 days.

Managers can do what you do, except: change the managers, hand the club over, move paid time and change autopay. The tip choices and the split, deleting tracks, removing DJs, the Discord webhook URL and the kit skin are for you only too.

A manager who owns no club of their own renews your club by paying any CueSwitch Terminal: the time goes to your club, and the terminal names it. A manager of two or more clubs gets the payment back, so the owner of each club renews it. The kit and the reminders always go to the owner. A manager who wants a club of their own asks the owner to remove them as a manager first. A manager can leave a club any time from the dashboard (Setup tab, Managers, Leave this club).

Can I change who owns the venue?

A club can be handed to one of its active managers. On the Setup tab, under Managers, choose Hand the club over, pick the manager, tick the box and confirm. They become the owner, you become a manager, and the paid time stays with the club. Autopay is turned off, because it paid from your Home Terminal. It is not possible while a DJ is on deck.

Your board and tip jar keep working while you stay a manager, or until the new owner rezzes their own kit. Tips paid into your jar still reach your L$. The new owner presses Resend kit to get the kit.

For any other change, for example to an avatar who is not a manager, or for a DJ Live or DJ Radio stream, contact support.
