Owner setup guide

Eighteen steps from payment to a working club. Six of them, the Stream Setter, the Schedule Board, the No-Click board and schedule, the Top Tippers board, the Greeter and club managers, are optional. Each step says where to click in your dashboard. Steps that use a CueSwitch device name it. The devices are sold separately at the CueSwitch shop. Times are Second Life Time (SLT, US Pacific).

  1. Pay at a CueSwitch Terminal

Pay a CueSwitch Terminal in-world. It accepts L$400 for 1 week, L$1,600 for 4 weeks or L$4,800 for 12 weeks. Find a terminal, or see pricing.

Your first payment creates your venue. For about a minute it shows as Setting up while your stream is built.

Club and DJ stream on one avatar?

An owner with a club and a DJ Live or DJ Radio stream switches between them in the dashboard. This guide is for the club. DJ streams covers the other.

  2. Get your CueSwitch devices (sold separately)

Your club runs from this dashboard, and the dashboard needs no device. CueSwitch devices, such as the board, the tip jar and the Greeter, are sold separately at the CueSwitch shop. A new club does not get a free venue kit. The steps below that use a device name it.

    WhereSetup tabGet your kit

If you already have a venue kit, you keep it, with Resend kit and updates. The CueSwitch Courier sends your kit to your inventory, in a folder called CueSwitch Venue Kit, followed by the version number. It holds the board, the tip jar, the Stream Setter, the Schedule Board, the Greeter, the No-Click board and schedule, the Top Tippers board, the Home Terminal, and three notecards. The badge on this step shows Waiting for the courier, Sent or Failed. It normally arrives within a couple of minutes.

A club that paid the earlier L$50 first week still gets the kit with its first full week (L$400 or more).

If nothing arrives, or the badge says Failed, press Resend kit. You can also touch the CueSwitch Courier at CueSwitch HQ.

  3. Rez the board and tip jar

This step needs the CueSwitch Board and the CueSwitch Tip Jar.

    1. Find them in your inventory. If you have a venue kit, open the CueSwitch Venue Kit folder.
    2. Drag the board and the tip jar out onto the ground of your parcel.
    3. Wait a minute. They connect to your venue on their own.

The Stream Setter, Schedule Board, No-Click board and schedule, Top Tippers board and Greeter are optional devices. They have their own steps below.

WhereSetup tabYour board and tip jar

Both devices should appear in this table with their region, version and last-seen time. The Devices table on the Overview tab lists them too. If they have not appeared after a few minutes, touch each one to make it try again.

  4. Set the parcel music URL

    WhereOverview tabYour streamStream URLCopy

    1. Copy the Stream URL. It is also on the Setup tab.
    2. In Second Life, open About Land on your parcel and go to the Sound tab.
    3. Paste the URL into Music URL and save.

The Stream URL starts with http:// and ends in a port number and /radio.mp3, for example http://stream.cueswitch.com:18010/radio.mp3. Paste it exactly as shown: Second Life viewers cannot play https:// streams.

Shortcut: when your board first connects, it asks you in a pop-up whether to set this parcel's music to your CueSwitch stream. Say yes. (This works when you own the land; on group land set it by hand.)

The first time someone hears your stream in Firestorm, its media filter asks whether to allow the stream address, then whether to remember that choice. Tell visitors to choose Allow, then Always, so it does not ask again.

If there is no Stream URL yet, your stream is still being set up. Reload the page after a minute. If the Sound tab is greyed out, your avatar does not have rights to edit that parcel.

Your stream is 320 kbps MP3 by default. To use 192 or 128 kbps instead, pick it under Stream quality on the Setup tab. Changing it restarts the stream. Listeners drop, and in Firestorm they have to turn their parcel music off and on again: the viewer does not reconnect by itself. Do it when the club is quiet.

    WhereSetup tabStream qualitySave stream quality

  5. Keep the music URL right with the Stream Setter (optional)

The Stream Setter is a small box, sold separately. It checks your parcel's music URL every minute and sets it to your CueSwitch stream when it differs. You never paste the URL by hand.

    1. Find the CueSwitch Stream Setter in your inventory and drag it out onto your parcel. Put it out of the way, for example on a shelf or under a table.
    2. Wait a minute. It tells you in local chat: parcel music set to and your stream address.
    3. To check on it later, touch it. Only the owner gets an answer: one status line.

Its floating text says one of these:

    • ok: the parcel plays your stream.
    • venue not active: your venue is still being set up, or it is suspended. The Stream Setter leaves the music alone.
    • no land rights: it cannot set the music. See the note below.
    • offline: it cannot reach CueSwitch. Touch it to try again.
    • no venue for this owner: the avatar that owns it has no CueSwitch venue.

    Land rights and group land

The Stream Setter can only set the music if its owner owns the parcel. On group land, let it connect once while you own it. Then right-click it, open Edit and the General tab, share it with the parcel's group and press Deed. CueSwitch keeps your venue through the deed.

You cannot give or sell the Stream Setter to someone else. It can only be deeded to a group. If you change the Music URL by hand, the Stream Setter puts the right one back within a minute.

  6. Allow the tip jar to pay DJs

This step needs the CueSwitch Tip Jar.

Second Life asks if the jar may take L$ from you. This is the debit permission. It lets the jar pay each DJ their share of a tip. Click Grant. If you miss the request, touch the jar to be asked again.

Then choose who gets the tips. DJ keeps every tip, the club keeps every tip, or a split: your choice.

WhereTips & Discord tabTipsTippers can chooseSave tip settings

Tick what tippers may choose (Tip the DJ, Tip the club, Split) and pick the default. Someone who just pays the jar gets the default. With more than one ticked, tippers can pick at the jar.

In a split, the DJ on deck gets your percentage of each tip, rounded down to a whole L$, and the venue keeps the rest. Example: a L$100 tip at 50% sends L$50 to the DJ and keeps L$50. When no DJ is on deck, or you are the one on deck, the venue keeps the whole tip, whatever was chosen. A DJ is on deck when they are live on the stream, or after they touch I'm on at the board.

  7. Check the board

This step needs the CueSwitch Board.

After a minute, the board shows your lineup and what is playing. You can preview the same page in your browser.

Touch the MENU button under the Board for the lineup and DJ options; click the screen to play the live page.

The menu also has a Get CueSwitch button for guests who want a system like yours. It opens the CueSwitch website and sends them one private IM with the way to CueSwitch HQ. Nothing goes to local chat, and each guest gets it once every 10 minutes. It is on by default. To switch it off, touch the MENU as the owner and choose Hide promo; Show promo brings it back. The tip jar's menu has the same button, and each object has its own switch.

WhereSetup tabCheck the board shows a live pageopen the board page

  8. Add your DJs

    WhereDJs tabAdd a DJ

    1. Type the DJ's Second Life name. “Jane Doe”, “jane.doe” and “Jane Resident” all work.
    2. Type an On-air name, up to 40 characters. The board and the alerts show it, so it must be different for each of your DJs.
    3. Press Add DJ.

The DJ appears in Your DJs with their own stream login and the status Can connect. Their Avatar column reads Not yet until they touch your board and choose DJ login. After that it reads Linked.

If a DJ shows Waiting for station, they were added before your stream was ready. Once your Stream URL appears on the Overview tab, press Create missing stream logins.

Disable stops a DJ connecting until you press Enable. Remove deletes their login, and their sets lose the DJ.

A DJ who is not streaming through CueSwitch can touch I'm on at the board. The board and the tip jar then show them as on deck, the jar pays them as the DJ on deck, and track requests go to them. It ends by itself at the end of their set, or after 3 hours. To take a DJ off deck at once, disable them.

Send your DJs the DJ guide.

  9. Build your schedule

    WhereSchedule tabAdd a set

    1. Repeats: choose Every week or One time only.
    2. Pick the Day (SLT) for a weekly set, or the Date (SLT) for a one-off.
    3. Set Start (SLT, 24h) and Length (minutes). Length runs from 15 to 720 minutes, in steps of 15.
    4. Choose the DJ, or choose No DJ and give the set a Title. A title is optional when a DJ is chosen.
    5. Press Add set.

All times are Second Life Time (SLT, US Pacific). Weekly sets keep their SLT clock time through daylight-saving changes. The Next 7 days list shows what is coming, and the board's lineup shows the same next 7 days.

WhereSchedule tabWho may connectOnly let DJs connect during their slotsSave

When this is on, a DJ's login only works during sets assigned to that DJ, from 10 minutes before the start. A DJ still on air when their set ends is disconnected within a minute. When it is off, any DJ on your list can connect at any time. Disabled DJs cannot connect either way.

  10. Show the schedule on a Schedule Board (optional)

The Schedule Board is a 2.4 m by 1.2 m screen. It shows this week's lineup in SLT with DJ pictures, and marks who is on now. The page refreshes itself every minute. It shows the schedule you built in the step above. It has no touch menu.

    1. Rez your CueSwitch Board first. The Schedule Board learns its page address from the Board.
    2. Drag the CueSwitch Schedule Board out of your inventory. Hang it on a wall or put it on a stand of your own, near the Board and in the same region. Turn it so the front faces your guests.
    3. Wait up to a minute. The floating text goes away and the lineup appears. A Board from the old 1.0.0 kit can take up to 5 minutes.

Both objects must have the same owner: you. If your viewer has media turned off, the screen stays dark.

  11. Show it to everyone with the No-Click board and schedule (optional)

The screen board and Schedule Board are richer, but Firestorm shows a screen only after one click. The CueSwitch Board - No-Click and CueSwitch Schedule - No-Click show the same facts in big letters that every viewer sees with no click: who is on air with their profile picture, the track and the next set, or who is on now and the next three sets. They cost more land impact, about 10 and 13. Rez them like the board, in the same region; the No-Click schedule learns your venue from either board. Neither has a menu.

  12. Show your top tippers (optional)

The CueSwitch Top Tippers board shows who tips the most, in big letters that every viewer sees with no click. It lists the top 4 tippers like #1 Jane Doe L$500. If you set a goal, the first line is the goal, like GOAL L$1200 / L$5000, followed by the top 3. It is off until you turn it on, and it costs no L$.

WhereTips & Discord tabTop tippers boardSave top tippers board

    1. Tick Show the top tippers board.
    2. Pick what it counts: Tonight (tips since 06:00 SLT, so a night that runs past midnight stays together), This set (the DJ set that is on now, or the last set when nobody is on) or This week (the last 7 days).
    3. Optional: type a goal in L$. Leave it empty for no goal line.
    4. Press Save top tippers board.
    5. Rez your CueSwitch Board first, then drag CueSwitch Top Tippers out of your inventory in the same region. It learns your venue from the Board and shows tips within about 20 seconds.

Every tip counts, whoever it was for: the DJ, your club or a split. The board shows avatar names, never avatar keys. While it is off, it shows only its title and the word OFF. Anyone who can see the board can read the names and totals, so turn it on only if your tippers are fine with that. The privacy policy says the same.

  13. Upload AutoDJ music

    WhereAutoDJ music tabUpload music

    1. Choose one or more MP3 files. Each can be up to 50 MB.
    2. Press Upload to AutoDJ.
    3. Wait a minute or two. AutoDJ starts playing your tracks.

AutoDJ plays your tracks, shuffled, whenever no DJ is live, so your parcel is never silent. The Tracks list shows what you have uploaded. Press Delete next to a track to remove it. If the tab says your station is still being set up, uploads open as soon as the Stream URL appears on the Overview tab.

    Music licensing

Only upload music you own or have the rights to. Music licensing is the venue's responsibility. See the terms.

  14. Set up alerts and Discord

If you have a CueSwitch Board, listeners opt in to go-live alerts at it: they touch it and choose Alerts on. They get an IM from the board when a DJ goes live. Tell your regulars.

To post a message in a Discord channel, which needs no board:

    WhereTips & Discord tabDiscord alerts

    1. In Discord, open the channel settings. Go to Integrations, then Webhooks, then New Webhook, then Copy Webhook URL.
    2. On your dashboard, paste it into Webhook URL and press Save webhook.
    3. The status changes to configured and shows the last 6 characters of the URL.

Only https://discord.com/api/webhooks/… and https://discordapp.com/api/webhooks/… addresses are accepted. The URL is stored encrypted and never shown again. To remove it, save with the field empty.

CueSwitch then posts to the channel by itself: when a DJ goes live (with the track that is playing), and, with the schedule, 15 minutes before each scheduled set and halfway through it while someone is on air. Every post is labeled CueSwitch (automated) and never pings @everyone, @here, roles or people. Under Which posts you can switch each kind off, and Send a test post posts one message now. The page also shows how the last post went. There are at most 24 posts a day, and a DJ who reconnects within 10 minutes does not post again. Posts stop while the venue is suspended.

  15. Welcome and count visitors with the Greeter (optional)

The Greeter is a small totem. For each avatar that arrives on its parcel it:

    • says your welcome line to that avatar only, in local chat (not in Silent mode, see below). It never sends an IM, and nobody else sees it;
    • gives them the first landmark in its Contents;
    • adds a clickable link to your group, if you set one. Scripts cannot send group invites, so the visitor clicks the link and presses Join;
    • counts the visit for your Visitors page.

It greets each avatar once per SLT day, never greets you, and stops at 60 greetings an hour.

    1. Make a landmark of your venue from your viewer's World menu. Use one you made yourself: it must be copyable.
    2. Drag the CueSwitch Greeter out of your inventory and rez it near the entrance of your parcel.
    3. The Greeter comes with no landmark, on purpose: it must be yours. Right-click it, choose Edit, open the Content tab and drag your landmark in. Without a landmark, visitors get no landmark, and the Greeter tells you so.
    4. Touch it. Only the owner gets an answer: one status line with connected, here now and greeted today, and a small menu with the Silent switch.

    WhereSetup tabGreeterSave greeter

Type your own Welcome line (up to 200 characters) and your Group. For the group, open its profile in Second Life and copy its UUID, or Copy URI. Leave the line empty for the default: “Welcome to <your parcel name>! Enjoy the music.” A new line or group reaches the Greeter within about 10 minutes.

    WhereVisitors tab

The Visitors tab shows who is here now, visitors today, a daily average, and unique visitors per day and per DJ set. The Greeter counts the parcel it stands on, and only while it is rezzed. CueSwitch stores no names and no avatar keys: each visitor becomes a one-way code that is different at every venue. Visit times are kept for 30 days. After that only the daily totals remain.

    Silent mode

Touch the Greeter and choose Silent on. It then says nothing in chat: no welcome line and no group link. It still hands each visitor your landmark and still counts visits. Choose Silent off to bring the chat line back. It starts with the chat line on.

    Group land

Like the Stream Setter, the Greeter can be deeded to the parcel's group after it has connected once. You cannot give or sell it to someone else. If you deed it, the Silent choice stays, and a member of that group can change it.

  16. Keep it running

The Overview tab shows Paid until and how much time is left. Pay any CueSwitch Terminal to renew. Or switch on autopay on your Home Terminal (Options > AutoPay). It is off by default. New time is added to what you have left.

You get a reminder 3 days and 1 day before your time runs out. After that there are 3 days of grace with the stream still on. Then the stream pauses, and your DJs, schedule and music are kept for 30 days. The details are in What happens if I miss a payment?

When the Setup tab shows Update available next to your board, tip jar or Greeter, see How do I update my devices?

  17. Add managers (optional)

    WhereSetup tabManagers

A club run by several avatars, for example on group land, can have up to 10 managers. Add each one with their avatar UUID (the key on their Second Life profile) and, if you like, a name. You stay the owner: the kit, the reminders and autopay stay with you.

    1. Adding someone invites them. The person accepts the invitation on their CueSwitch dashboard: they sign in with Owner login on a CueSwitch Terminal, or a link from Cara Rewell, and press Accept. An invitation expires after 14 days. The board shows Owner login only to you.
    2. Managers can do what you do on the dashboard, except: change the managers, hand the club over, move paid time and change autopay. The tip choices and the split, deleting tracks, removing DJs, the Discord webhook URL and the kit skin are for you only too.
    3. A manager who owns no club of their own renews your club by paying any CueSwitch Terminal. The time goes to your club, and the terminal names it.
    4. A manager can leave a club any time from the dashboard.

Your board, tip jar and Schedule Board stay yours: they only work together when one avatar owns them all, and the tip jar pays DJs from its owner's L$.

    Hand the club over

To give the club to one of its active managers, choose Hand the club over under Managers, pick the manager, tick the box and confirm. They become the owner and you become a manager. The paid time stays with the club, and autopay is turned off. Your board and tip jar keep working while you stay a manager, or until the new owner rezzes their own kit.
